Blood Donor Registration
Individuals wishing to donate blood are required to complete a Donor Registration Form, which collects essential information including their name, address, phone number, email address, and health history.
Prior to the donation, each blood donor will receive counseling, along with informative material regarding the blood donation process. This preparation ensures that donors are well-informed and comfortable with their decision.
Health History of Donor
During a private and confidential one-on-one session, donors will be asked about their health history and any potential risk behaviors. It is imperative that donors disclose any medications they may be taking. Additionally, vital signs - including pulse, blood pressure, temperature, weight, and hemoglobin levels - will be assessed before the donation proceeds.
Blood Donation
Only those deemed healthy will be permitted to donate blood, and this procedure will be conducted in the presence of a qualified medical doctor. For whole blood donation, a phlebotomist will cleanse the designated area on the donor's arm and utilize a brand-new blood bag connected to a single-use sterile needle to draw blood. The entire process for whole blood donation typically lasts between 7 to 10 minutes.
Donation by Apheresis
For single-component donations, such as platelets and plasma, apheresis can be employed. This method allows the donor to donate a specific component of their blood, with platelet and plasma donations via apheresis taking approximately two hours. Patients undergoing chemotherapy or suffering from dengue fever have a continuous need for platelets. At Prathama Blood Centre, we warmly welcome voluntary donors to register for platelet apheresis.
Refreshment
After donating blood, donors will be offered light refreshments, including snacks and beverages, in the designated refreshment area. They may leave after 10 to 15 minutes, provided they feel comfortable.
