Basic Requirements

Most people can give blood if they are in good health. There are some basic requirements one need to fulfill in order to become a blood donor.

Age : Between 18 to 65 yrs (First-time donors should be no older than 60 yrs)
Weight : At least 50 Kg
Hemoglobin : ≥ 12.5 gm/dL
Duration Between 2 donation : For Male - 3 Months (90 days) & for Female - 4 Months (120 days)
Pulse : Between 60 to 100 per minutes
Blood Pressure : Systolic 100-140 mm Hg & Diastolic 60-90 mm Hg
Temperature : Normal (Oral Temperature not exceeding 37.5 °C)
Health conditions :

The donor should be in a healthy state of mind and body. They should fulfill the following criteria:

Past One Year - not been treated for Rabies or received Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (Ig)

Past Six Months - not had a tattoo, ear or skin piercing or acupuncture, not received blood or blood products, no serious illness or major surgery, no contact with illness or major surgery, no contact with a person with hepatitis or yellow jaundice, had Dental work.

Past Three Months - not donated blood or been treated for Malaria.

Past 2 weeks - taken any antibiotics

Past 4 hours - Should be eat anything

Present - not suffering from cough, influenza or sore throat, common cold

Women donor - should not be pregnant or breast feeding her child, should not be donating during her menstrual cycles

Behaviour :
  1. Donor must not give blood if he/she engaged in "at risk" sexual activity in the past 12 months
  2. If donor ever had a positive test for HIV (AIDS virus), he/she will be permanently deferred.
